Taking a Break

In order to stave off the February doldrums, we went on a family excursion to Portland this weekend. Jeff had Friday off, so we packed up and drove the 3+ hours to that fun city. We went to Ikea and Powell’s Books, two of our faves. We stayed in a hotel with an indoor pool on Friday night. We went to the Children’s Museum on Saturday morning. It was so much FUN to get away together. It was so good for Jay, Rose, and me to get out of our ickle apartmental for 30 whole hours in a row.

How ‘bout some pictures?

Patiently riding in the cramped car.

IMG_3308

Who said you need sun to wear sunglasses? (it was raining)

IMG_3299

We need to get Jay a rain jacket of his own. Even though this is super cute. The hem of Jeff’s jacket hovered about one centimeter above the sidewalk, and Jay looked like he was gliding along while we walked back from Powell’s Books.

IMG_3362

At Ikea, we got a pile of plastic dishes to replace our melted, damaged ones. This stuff is actually microwave safe! I’m sort of excited about it. After browsing books and furniture a-plenty, we went swimming at our hotel. I wish I had a video of Rose the tadpole kicking her little feet. Her soft round body was so buoyant and she wore a froggy green diaper in the water and kicked her feet like a dolphin. She was in heaven. Jay got dangerously brave and kept waltzing off the edge of the pool steps into deep water. We had to be pretty vigilant with him. We were all tuckered out after that.

IMG_3311

Rose fell asleep first.

IMG_3310

Jay was a close second.

Jeff and I stayed up a little later to watch another episode of BBC’s Dr. Who. heh.

IMG_3317

Jay got us up bright and early. Jeff and I took turns running while Jay and Rose drew pictures on the Kindle Fire. I had the best run—I found a park with a springy, cushy bark-covered path and huge green trees. The air was cool and damp. I drank it all in and ran FAST. Therapy.

The Portland Children’s Museum was smaller than I expected, swarming with kids, and cost a small fortune to get in. But Jay and Rose loved it. It was a great indoor place to go in the winter.

The kid grocery store was a hit.

The bossiest kids controlled the check-out and the other kids unloaded the shelves.

The plastic fruit was heavy and textured just like real fruit, so you can imagine that there was plenty of nibbling on the sly.

IMG_3326

Rose loved this fake plastic ice/freezer section of the play grocery store. The only thing left in it was a clam. It got stuck on her knee.

The only Rose in the garden—way prettier than any ole daisy.

IMG_3343

There was a little age 3 and under room. Rose loved the slide, but she wasn’t patient enough to go around and climb up the steps.

_IGP4679

Jay was in motion the whole 2.5 hours we were there.

_IGP4685

Jay loved the train room, of course.

IMG_3361

For lunch, we went to this lovely block downtown and browsed the various food carts/trailers/stands. We chose Indian food, and then walked to a Safeway with a café in it and ate our heaven. Jay had chicken strips from Safeway, and Rose had a PBJ. But their lucky parents had curry.

IMG_3358

My Goa Curry Chicken on basmati rice with a fresh, hot naan on the side was beyond delicious—it was celestial. It was also huge. Jeff’s lamb curry was the same hugeness. We didn’t even want dinner that night. Mmmm. mmmmm, mmmmmm, mmmmmm. It was funny to eat something that gourmet with a plastic fork while sitting in a grocery store.

Then we drove home.

Doilies and Napkins

Happy Valentine’s Day! Isn’t it nice to have a whole dedicated day to celebrating LOVE? Doilies really make it feel valentiney. So we ate off of doilies for every meal on the 14th. Another thing that makes it feel valentiney to me is a well-folded napkin. I’ll explain in a minute…

IMG_3217

Here’s Jeff’s valentine—since he gets up and leaves before the rest of us are awake, I set the breakfast table for him. With a doily, of course. I found a sweet website while preparing Jeff’s valentine: www.napkinfoldingguide.com.

Six years ago on Valentine’s Day, Jeff and I had our first date. He took me to a fancy shmancy Italian restaurant where they had fancy-shmancy folded napkins. I was pretty nervous about all the shmanciness until Jeff took his fancy folded napkin and put it on his head. That broke the ice perfectly.

SO this year I tried my hand at napkin folding. Turns out it’s easier than it looks.

I bet you saw these coming…

Jay’s plate-man wore his napkin hat and a green pea-beard.

IMG_3251

Family Valentine Dinner—with doilies, of course! We had our traditional alfredo pasta. I also tried my hand at breadsticks this year. They were average (definitely should’ve soaked them in butter). We weren’t in the mood to try for a better dinner picture—we wanted to eat!

IMG_3238

Oh yeah, Jeff left me another French love note on the mirror. For some reason I think it’s really cute when a MAN draws hearts all over the place. It makes me a little bit giggly.

Jeff came home from work in the evening bearing valentines for us all.

Here’s mine. My husband always knows what treat I like best. I fell in LOVE with these things back on my birthday when a sweet sister in our ward brought me one. Jeff also brought a bag of our favorite Peanut Butter M&M’s back for and all of us to share.

And he brought his Rose a rose. It was so cute. Rose CLUTCHED her rose all the way till dinner time. Jay tried to get her to sword fight him with it.

[I thought I got all of the peanut butter out of her hair at lunch…oops, missed some]

_IGP4631

_IGP4626

Rose loved her rose. We love our Rose. Valentine hearts all around.

Our LOVEly family dinner ended with some in-house entertainment, provided by a certain dynamic duo:

IMG_3261

Cheesy hair gel application, accompanied by squeaky singing, and adorned with smashed peas.

IMG_3256

Jeff was doing his funny voices to make Jay laugh, and Jay was copying him. It has been MONTHS since I got a picture of Jay’s real smile—he never sits still, looks at the camera, or smiles when I ask him to. Yay for a real smile!

IMG_3257

After we bathed the cheese off of the children and tucked them into bed, Jeff and I lit two tall candles and enjoyed a decadent slab of Ghiradelli brownies together in the quiet, soft, flickery candlelight. Then we watched a not-so-romantic episode of BBC’s Dr. Who on Netflix. Hilarious, weird British entertainment is wonderful.

Happy Valentine’s Day to all you dear people who I love.

Sunday Best

This morning, Jay randomly asked Jeff to take a picture of him at church. So here are the two cutest members of our family after church, in their Sunday best. I love making them hold hands.

I try to keep Rose quiet during sacrament meeting, but she just adores charming the families sitting in the rows behind us. She looks over my shoulder at them and grins and communicates. It’s hard to pluck her away. She loves her new sunglasses, so I brought them to help with her silence today. I think a quiet baby wearing sunglasses is in fact more distracting than a loud baby without sunglasses! And Rose was kind of squealy and squirmy today too. I felt bad because she was cracking me UP with her antics. By the end of Sacrament meeting, Jeff and I both felt bedraggled and trampled. Whew.

_IGP4598

Black eye almost gone!

_IGP4599

This is some concentration. I love love love Jay in his big black bowtie.

_IGP4601

Rose’s birthday rose dress is another fave. As well as Jeff’s special Sunday crepes with peanut butter and whipped cream and Nutella for lunch. ohman. We’re spoiled.

Jay says crepes in the funniest way. In Nursery today, he made valentines with his leader, Sister Cook.

Sundays are the best!

The ONE Rose

Happy Birthday to our sweet little Rose! The big day was yesterday. I can’t believe my SECOND baby is a whole year old. How’d that happen so fast? I get kind of nostalgic and a tad emotional on my kids’ birthdays. I divided this long post into 2 parts: past and present. [By the way, I am not ashamed that there are at least 25 pictures on this post. After all, I never said I could restrain myself with cute faces and a camera...]

Part I: The Past

IMG_3180

The happy birthday girl in her birthday clothes. I just love her so much, it makes my heart happy to see her growing and learning but my heart also aches a little when I see how she’s growing up so fast. Parenthood is emotional business.

One year old—she didn’t love the hat I rubber banded around her neck (hence the tears).

It’s kind of the trend to say a few things about the personality and stats of the star baby. I usually get too caught up with the pictures to say a whole lot, but I’ll make an effort. Rose weighs enough for us to turn her car seat frontwards. Her feet are at least 2 inches smaller than Jay’s were at her age. I got her a pair of softy shoes back during a Labor Day sale, based on the size of Jay’s one-year-old shoes. They are HUGE on her. The people Rose loves the most are Jay, Mommy, Daddy, and Aunt Steph. Rose is a comedian. She gets this goofy grin on her face and tries to do something silly to make us laugh. She really wants to walk by herself…but she’s not quite there yet. She often pulls herself up on my legs and tries to follow me around while I’m cooking or cleaning. It’s kind of dangerous for both of us.

Part II: The [birthday] Present

Rose had a calm little birthday. We had homemade birthday hats, cake, and macaroni and cheese. We had a few presents. We had balloons. We sang to the birthday girl. We hugged her to pieces. Here’s the photographic evidence:

IMG_3047

Just woke up on her birthday! She loves her fuzzy blanket with a bunny head on it.

IMG_3051

When Rose woke up, Jay immediately ran to the bag where her presents were and gave her the one from him: a car (of course). We saved the other gifts till dinner time when Daddy was home.

IMG_3063

Rose even had a few phone calls on her birthday!

IMG_3081

Possibly one of the all around favorite parts of the day (for the kids) was when I dropped the flour tub while I was cooking. It poofed all over the place…Jay and Rose were directly in the line of fire, since they prefer to sit and play at my ankles while I cook. They had a great time playing in the flour. Jay even pushed it all under the fridge to clean it up for me.

IMG_3084

Birthday dinner: real mac n cheese! Both Jay and Rose absolutely adore this stuff. In fact, Rose didn’t really want her cupcake because she was so full of macaroni!

IMG_3095

IMG_3096

IMG_3102

Favorite.

IMG_3120

We had some cake too! I made 2 cupcakes and then put the rest of the batter into a pan because I hate making and frosting cupcakes. I made a sour cream pound cake with chocolate cream cheese frosting because plain old cake isn’t very yummy to us (in my opinion, when it comes to dessert, the more butter and cream, the better). Jay’s and Rose’s cupcakes had whipped cream on top because they love it so much and it’s a little  less sugary than chocolate frosting. Not that cake should be healthy, but I thought they’d like it better that way. You know.

IMG_3123

Birthday hats!

IMG_3131

After dinner (and a bath), Jay opened Rose’s presents for her. He gave her 2 cars, and she also go some clothes and sunglasses. I can’t decide who loves the Hotwheels more—Jay or Rose…

IMG_3138

Then the Birthday Girl requested a story. And then she went to bed.

Rose loves her new sunglasses and Hotwheels. I love her new jeggings. A few notes about the video: Jay has been requesting violin music, so that’s the Mozart in the background. And Rose has sort of started saying thank you when we hand her something. You can barely hear her say it at the end of the video.

Happy birthday to my cool daughter!
