Clearly

We’ve enjoyed some rain off and on all week, and you know what that means: CLOUDS! The sky is one of my favorite parts of living here in the Yakima Valley. It’s so wide! And deep! When it’s full of puffy clouds, it seems to go on forever and ever. I told Jeff that’s what I think the fourth dimension looks like—a big skyful of clouds. He has a much better handle on dimensions than me, so he merely chuckled. But the SKY!

These views were taken from our back porch. The view from our west ridge of Grandview is exceedingly fine. On my run this Wednesday, I had to work hard to stay on the wide road because I was so busy cloud-gazing. I love the sky.

On a similar clear, scenic note, I’ve noticed off and on for the past few months that our windows were looking a bit dusty. Today I finally took action with a bottle of Windex and some Bounty paper towels. WOAH, they were dirtier than I thought. It has probably been years since this house has had its windows washed—it was uninhabited for two years before we moved in, for goodness sakes. Plus we have dust storms here every now and then, and the whole exterior of our white house could definitely use a good power-washing. Still, I didn’t know that this much dirt could cling to glass windows so… tenaciously.

IMG_9162

After rubbing the inside (!) of one window.

IMG_9163

Annnnnd after the outside too…YUCK! I did gouge out an inch or two of dirt from the edges of the window too, but YUCK!

Now I’m enjoying the pleasant, constant surprise of gazing out the window at the clear view, unmarred by a layer of blah. It’s amazing how easy it is to get used to dirty windows. I knew they were dirty, but I didn’t think it was that big of a deal. I could go on—the clean windows metaphor is a juicy one, but I shall resiiisst (think Jaques the crab of Finding Nemo).

The third and final item of bloggyness today (bloggyness=blog business) isn’t really related to poofy clouds and clean windows, but I will slide it in here nonetheless. All winter, Jay talked about starting preschool when he turned four. I decided that we’d do preschool at home, and worked hard to get him excited about that instead of preschool in a school, and he was. For the past few weeks though, he hasn’t really talked about it much. Lo and behold, on his birthday, he said “I’m 4! Now we can do preschool at home!” I wasn’t planning on starting anything till this fall, but how can I deny a bright little sponge of a boy who wants to do SCHOOL and learn every day? Clearly he’s ready now. So today I peeked at Pinterest for some ideas and quickly had to stop because getting ONE idea from that place is like trying to take a sip from a fire hydrant, as I’m sure I’ve said before.

IMG_9167

Instead, I got out a sheet of white paper and a yardstick and a pencil, pen, and crayons. I drew some handwriting lines and A’s. Then we had our first little preschool. It is all too easy to sound prideful when talking about your own children and their amazingness. Suffice it to say that Jay takes after his intelligent father. He’s understandably a tad clumsy with a pencil, but he made a valiant effort to hold it right and it was pretty cute to see him concentrate on it so carefully. I just hope I’m teaching him the right way! Do I hold my pencil right? I don’t know!

IMG_9168

We did some letter tracing and circling and after that Jay said knowledgably, “they have playtime at school too,” so he went and played for 10 minutes, asking me every other minute how much longer school playtime was. Then we did some counting. We lined up all 18 of our hotwheels and counted them a few times together. Then we added the 3 Lego car creations and counted all 21 of them (#15-18 are a little muddled). We had a school potty break (“do they have potty breaks at school, Mommy?”). After that we had story time and Rose went to bed for her nap while Jay and I did our project: we made playdough. Pink and green. It was great spending quality time with my sweet Jay. Home preschool is way more fun than I thought it was going to be! Hopefully we can keep this up—3+ days a week is my goal. I have a feeling Jay will make sure we do.

Birthday Boy

IMG_9090

We always open mailed presents early—Sunday morning for this one. Rose wanted to help so badly.

IMG_9101

They got up at 5am on The Birthday. Bring on the presents.

IMG_9104

Ninja Turtles and books! Jay played with his Ninja Turtles all day. We stayed home and hung out together, playing, reading, and doing laundry. It rained all morning and then got really windy, so it was a cozy happy home-birthday.

IMG_9111

Jay’s friend (and future wife) Molly had her 4th birthday on Sunday. Jay went hometeaching with Jeff to her house and shared her cake. Today Molly called Jay (with a little help) and sang happy birthday to him over the phone. It was so cute! They are pals.

IMG_9131

This little cousin came over for a while too. Do you see that glistening drool diamond on her chin? I had to dig out some of Rose’s old clothes for her because she drenched her own clothes in slobber.

I made the cake yesterday. I hate baking for two reasons: 1. too many rules, and 2. It’s messy! I am kind of a neat freak in the kitchen. I despise walking barefoot on crumbs. I detest having ingredients scattered all over the counter, and I do not like cleaning it all up. I always try to clean up after myself as I go along, and I end up getting half the stuff out again before I’m done, thus making it even harder than it needs to be.

IMG_9117

Chocolate cake with chocolate frosting in the outside and peanut butter frosting in the middle (and on the smile). It was my best cake yet, thanks to the CAKE MIX! And I even bought my first cake pans for it. It’s amazing how much those two small details helped.

IMG_9120

The four-year-old! We cheated just a tiny bit and had some birthday cake at lunchtime before the official evening song and candles. Gasp. After Jay’s birthday dinner of homemade mac n cheese, the relations came over and we had cake and candles and singing. I’m utterly caked out.

We love Jay!

Happy Birth-Jay

Better late than never

Jeff got a large cardboard envelope from Walla Walla University in the mail last week.

IMG_9085

It was his diploma! He finished his master’s degree 3 years ago, but he didn’t walk for the graduation ceremony, and they seem to have been holding his diploma hostage ever since. We’ve been wondering where this fancy piece of paper was hiding out.

IMG_9086

Well, they did throw in this bonus—a laminated wallet-sized copy of the diploma. In case he needs to prove his intelligence on the road?

Even though Jeff has his MAT, he still has to get another degree to be an officially official French teacher in the state of Washington. Jeff is certified to teach in 49 states with this degree. Except Washington! He is taking online classes to add a Master of Foreign Languages to his brain cells. I don’t know how he does it all. At least he’s allowed to teach full-time in the meantime. By next year he will have two master’s degrees. BOOM. THEN and only then will they so dub him MR. White, certified teacher of Washington. Wahoo!

Before and After

I had a few amusing/bemusing thoughts this morning. As I was making bread, I thought about how 4 years ago I had long flowing hair, no kids, and no bread-making skills. Anyone who meets me today would see a short-haired mother continually fending off 2+ kids while pulling fresh, fragrant loaves out of the oven. Change is amazing isn’t it? Sometimes I feel like people who meet me NOW don’t know the “real me” (the long-haired inexperienced cook me of yore). But that version of myself is gone! She has changed into this short-haired bread-baking mama, and she is the only ME. Even once my hair grows back, I’ll still be different than I was back then, and that’s fine with me. Change happens so slowly, but looking back to the beginning makes it appear to have happened in an instant. I’m glad we get to grow, change, learn, and add new things to our old selves.

Here are a few now-and-thens/before-and-afters, since I’m in a reflecting mood:

Before this [possibly] potty-training big girl…

IMG_9066

…

…was this chubby, precious little fuzz-top:

…

Before this handsome, strapping almost-4-year-old…

IMG_9069

…was this slim smiley little sweetie:

IMG_4391

…

Before this aproned matron of the 1850s…

IMG_9054

…was this empire-waisted lady of 1799:

IMG_0834

…

Before this supernatural, melodramatic romance…

…

…was this old-fashioned, tender love story:

IMG_9065

I find it interesting that apparently the timeless image of true love always has the man looking at the woman’s ear. I suppose it’s really him refusing to take his gaze off of his true love, and that makes it a dear, romantic pose (although, I looked through my wedding pictures, and I noticed that the only pictures that Jeff and I managed to take our eyes off of each other were the ones where someone made us smile at the camera together…so if you ask me, true love’s ideal pose should be of both man and woman gazing at each other, happily and utterly oblivious to their surroundings. However, in spite of the gap between the ideal and the real, I’m still quite fond the ear-gazing pose of love).

In any case, what I mean to say is this: Edward and Bella don’t really seem worthy of striking the same pose as Gilbert and Anne. I’m not saying I don’t like the Twilight Saga, I’m just reading the Anne books right now and can’t help but notice how much more…wholesome they are, while still managing to keep the happy romance intact.

 IMG_9061

…

IMG_0082

Our true love pose, laughing at my furry Queen of Narnia cape, no doubt, but with that “lover’s gaze” through the grins. Apparently I’m feeling a little sentimental and slightly mushy in spite of the crying baby on my lap.

…

Here’s to finding the simple joys of the good ole days in our fresh now-a-days.
