Canal call

At sunset after the kids are in bed, I like to slip outside into the evening air and take a short walk in my pajamas along the canal to admire the sunset. It calls me, like Moana's ocean. The view feeds my SOUL. I love the multi-layered symbolism in a wide view: beauty, light, creation, peace, thought, quiet, listening, reflection, moving, waiting, hoping, basking, wondering, smiling. That's a start.

One evening this week it was not quite so blazing hot, so we went on a family walk:

Amber's energy lasted longest.

Amber ran ahead and stressed us out, trotting along the edge of the canal. Her little dandelion-fluff halo of curls kept catching the light in the distance. We power-walked along and eventually caught up with her and her free spirit.

Sometimes Jay still holds hands.

The kids all got tired and spent a good portion of our one mile walk begging Jeff for rides.

Home again, home again.

I will probably have to take 1,000 more pictures of 1,000 more sunsets over this canal before I have had my fill. But no, I can't imagine ever getting tired of this view:

Not bad for phone pictures! This was a few nights ago.

I brought out the good camera for the tale end of tonight's sunset:

Reflecting clouds, red horizon.

Mt. Adams, above and below.

Mt. Rainier, peeking through the trees in the middle there.

Goodnight.

Beach memories

We loved our three days/two nights at the Hobuck Beach Resort on the Makah Indian Reservation near Neah Bay, WA at the beginning of August. Hanging out at the beach with kids is the best: there's something for everyone. Jeff and Jay took on the waves, Amber danced around in the surf ankle deep and dug endlessly in the sand, Rose built sand creations and ran in and out of the waves, and I walked along in the shallow water's edge taking pictures of it all.

Here are the last of our pictures from the beach:

Amber was in motion the entire time:

Bald eagle sighting! I used full zoom on the camera, then cropped the image down till the eagle was visible.

Our row of little beach cabins. They were so perfect. We had a kitchenette (complete with mini-fridge, sink, stove, microwave, and toaster), a full bathroom, a separate bedroom, and a main room (with a table, couch, and chair). It felt SO GOOD to be able to shower as needed.

Day trip:
We hiked to Cape Flattery, the westernmost tip of the lower 48 states. It was 1.5 miles round trip on a hot hot afternoon, but well worth the effort. What a view! This is another trail that I have had my eye on for years. It felt great to finally go for it.

After one journey across one of the many wobbly wooden walkways, Amber decided that she did not like to walk on them. I expected her to love them! But she did not, so Jeff carried her over.

The trail was not smooth. It was rough and hilly. No easy strolls through the woods on the Olympic Peninsula! You've got to work for every view.

We saw two or three small fenced viewpoints before the main one at the trail's end.

The viewpoint was a small platform built on the edge of a cliff, with a step ladder going up to it.

The kids at the viewpoint, with Tatoosh Island in the background.

All five of us, at the edge of the world together.

Sandstone sea caves: stunning.

We stopped at Washburn's General Store back in Neah Bay on the way back to our cabin to pick up some fresh cold grapes and milk. Those grapes were heavenly after our hot thirsty hike!

Watching The Karate Kid on the little satelite TV while recovering from our hot hike. Jay and Rose were baffled at the concept of commercials. They kept saying "why is the movie stopped again?" HA, Netflix generation!

Dinner in the cabin! I brought some pesto and we had a fancy penne pesto dinner with grapes on the side. There were 3 chairs with the table, and we pulled a nightstand up for Amber to sit on, and Jeff sat on our cooler with a pillow on top.

The kids fell asleep in the bedroom. Amber slept under the desk in the bedroom, on two couch cushions...until Jeff and I were ready for bed, whereupon we moved her, Jay, and Rose out to the main room.

The fold-out couch bed

Rose and Amber loved playing in the bedroom's wardrobe.

The cabin porch was idyllic with a beach view, beachy breeze, and two heavy chairs.

That  pillow-topped cooler came in handy again.

Back out on the beach...

The rule on all the signs was "take only pictures, leave only footprints" so we did not take home any seashells, but this one was so perfect that I had to take a picture of it.

The kids found a forgotten shovel and Amber took possession of it.

I want to go back now that this hazy wildfire smoke is cleared out!

Building a sand castle for the tide to knock down.

One of their games: they took turns drawing a line in the sand with a stick, and the other person had to walk exactly on the line, loop-de-loops, swirls, zigzags, and all.

Tired smooshy cheeked shoulder ride. Amber's intensity finally caught up to her on the last morning. She was worn out!

Goodbye, Hobuck Beach!
