[insert clever title here]

I’m feeling a little bit post-y, but I don’t really know what I want to say. AHHH cliché blog moment!

It says, “Blogging. Never before have so many people with so little to say said so much to so few.” HA. Ok, I really just wanted to post a few cuties from today:

We did some block-body tracing this morning. I had to work fast to trace these little squirmers before they knocked the blocks over.

While we were all on the floor together, I took a group picture. Rose’s pony tail gave me such a long silky moustache, I was cracking UP.

We also planted our porch herb garden today: basil, oregano, thyme, rosemary, and parsley will all hopefully be springing up soon to freshen our dinners. It was super windy when we went out to pinch the seeds into the dirt, and the wind blew all but 3 or 4 of the rosemary seeds right out of my hand. So we may get random rosemary mixed in with everything else. Or we may have no rosemary at all. Such an exciting mystery.

That’s all. I only take pictures of the cute good things, so don’t be fooled into thinking it’s all games and smiles around here! What actually happened today was this (I’m not trying to rant here, I’m just trying to candidly explain how MUCH of a morning is lost in 3 pictures, so when I’m old and gray and reminiscing, I can remember the pictures and the other stuff):

First thing in the morning, Layne came over and I did some cleaning and regular housework to some Grooveshark tunes while Jay asked me over and over to play with him. Then I cared for a cranky baby Layne who did not want anything but a good poo, as it turned out an hour later. THEN, while Layne fell into a fitful slumber, I managed to get myself down on the floor for a few minutes to trace my children with blocks and take those carefree [possibly misleading] pictures.

Layne woke up and finally moved those bowels while we read a few stories. After changing a baby diaper and a toddler diaper, I parked the babe on the floor and fed her intermittent bottle snacks while we got our herb box ready. Jay and Rose did their best to “help” with the herbs, but it was uphill work. The phone rang. While I talked on the phone, I dashed back and forth between a fussy baby and the table with our gardening supplies laid on it with two children sifting through the seeds, trying to keep everything from spilling or crying.

Then Steph picked up Layne and we had lunch. Jay resumed his every other minute “Mommy, do you want to play with me?” Which I find to be a very stressful question, because when I say not right now or no, I automatically feel bad because it sounds like I’m telling my little boy that I don’t want to spend time with him, when really I’m just doing my very best to balance a bajillion other tasks and still be a nice mom at the same time. I’ve started trying to explain to Jay that the reason I can’t play with him all day every day is because we have to do both work AND play every day. I told him that if we didn’t have work, we wouldn’t know what play was. He gave me this look like, “yeah right, Mom!” I do try to balance my work, personal, and kid time. Some days it’s easier than others. Some days we just go to the park and forget about the work, (and pay for the slacking with eggs for dinner).

If you add one of these three things after every sentence above, you’ll have as accurate a picture of a normal day with the White things as I can paint on a mere blog:
1. a pause to tie on or remove a kid’s cape
2. a pause to kiss an owie better or to tell kids to share
3. a pause to dodge one child or another who is inevitably standing right in my way.

So that’s what you didn’t see in today’s happy go-lucky pictures. Just a normal day and yet so tricky to capture with a camera.

I think I’ll go play with Jay now. I hope I have time to indulge in a few chapters of my book later. (I’m reading Anne of Green Gables for the…tenth time? I love it so much. It’s one of my springtime books. I have 3 or 4 books that I read every spring. I laugh every time I read about Anne and her escapades, and then vow to visit Prince Edward Island one day).

Heh, the moustache one more time.

You have quite the handful. At least your kids love you and WANT you to play with them. As my grandfather always said, "It could always be worse"

Ditto. I have also tried teaching about work lately. My other secret mother trick is whenever Matthew wants me to play but I am occupied with say...cleaning up the eternally messy house...I explain that if he would stop making messes (throwing everything he touches) I would have more time to play. I'm not sure it's working, but I am trying! And I also LOVE Anne of Green Gables. I once wrote a scholarship application all about how I was like Anne. Haha! Perhaps that will be my next read.

I feel that same guilt whenever Cambrie wants to play, for the same reason! I'm always thinking back a hundred years ago and wondering how moms did it then--did they actually play with their kids all that much? I mean, think of running a farm--wouldn't there be work all day long? Anyways, so I usually just tell Cambrie, "I do like to play, but it's important that we get the work done so we can have food to eat and a clean house and clean clothes. So you can go play, but right now I need to do these five billion things that need to be done." And then she pouts and I continue to feel guilty. :-) it's a vicious cycle.
