Spring Break

Last week was spring break. We stayed home, home, home and relaxed in non-scheduled, commitment-free comfort, which felt extra decadent after months of filling cross country coaching commitments. Jeff went to track practice four days. I ran, biked, and read fluffy books at home. The kids earned their daily screen time with equal outside time. Our tulips bloomed! The wind blew too strong for too many days. But the sun also shined a lot and we enjoyed that happy vitamin D in and around the wind. The girls did a lot of trampoline-jumping. All of the nearby neighbor-friends went out of town, so our house was even more of a quiet haven. We slept in past 7am more than once. On Tuesday, we went to Richland to get the kids new bikes (that's a separate post). On Wednesday, I did my longest-ever mountain bike ride, 21 miles! On Thursday, we had three friends over--one friend for each kid--and they played happily all afternoon together. On Saturday, Jeff went to coach at a track meet jamboree.

It took me all week to adjust mentally to the lack of schedule so I could sleep in past 7am. Now it's time to switch back to the school schedule again!

A few pictures of our homey relaxing week:

My single row of tulips, blooming cheerfully.

The tulips aren't exactly super noticeable along the front of our house from farther away, but oh well!

Sparkly pretty canal water--an old friend that we missed during wintertime.

Mt. Adams, bright and snowy on the horizon.

The girls, practicing flips and handsprings on the trampoline.

Jay has a small collection of large sticks that he likes to wield.

I had fun with the portrait mode on my phone's camera, and took a portrait of each kid. Doesn't Jay have a winning smile? He totally inherited Jeff's naturally straight teeth and the symmetrical Argyle smile.

Rosie in the sunshine. She has lost so many teeth lately that we aren't sure if she will have straight teeth or not, haha.

Amber demanded a portrait just like Rose's, so she copied the head-leaning pose in her own Amber-ific way.

On Tuesday evening, I realized that I never took a cute Easter-ific dressed-up kid picture, so I lined them up in the sunshine and snapped a quick messy picture of my sweet bright babies.

Cruising down Lewandowski Road on my 21 mile bike ride.

Amber was being all cute and snuggling up with Jeff one morning, and then her real reason came out: "I can hear your show better when I put my head close to your earphones."

Our Easter lily bloomed, plumed, and perfumed on our kitchen table all week. (Portrait mode also works on flowers, I discovered).

Deep rich BLUENESS all around.

Stupid wind, gusted dust into my face till my skin was tenderized and I had grit between my teeth after two runs.

Shavasana, or corpse pose in yoga. Haha, this picture makes me laugh-- I'm still doing that 100 day dress challenge where I have to take a picture of myself wearing the same dress every day. I got bored doing the same old poses so I shavasana'd for Friday's daily dress pic. Doing yoga in a dress is actually pretty free-n-comfy, by the way. Also, do they make yoga mats for tall people?

Irrigation situation: the wind blew a blast of frigid droplets onto me during this run.

The apple trees are blossoming! I wanted to get closer to that swath of white, but the wind was billowing dust along the road leading up to it, so I decided to turn back.

Choke, endless dusty wind gusts. It must be spring in the Yakima Valley!

All those years in WA and I never visited during apple blossom time, so I still do not know what an orchard of apple blossoms smells like:(
However, if there is always a dusty gale going on at this time of year, maybe I couldn’t have smelled any scent anyway!

Musing: If those who fled the Oklahoma dust bowl were called “Okies”, then will the folks who get dusted out of your valley be called “Yakies”?
