Just some pictures

No fun stories or activities or adventures. Just some plain ole pictures from a normal day in the life of the White Things.

Rose watches Jay like a happy little hawk

IMG_5068

I have to undo one snap on each side of the leg openings of this outfit to give Rose’s lushious legs room to breathe. Jonathan Swift would approve.

Jay thinks that the jumper is a swing, and he has pushed Rose pretty high a few times before I could intervene.

Thank you, Biscuit

Once upon a time in Tennessee, I had a horse named Biscuit.

IMG_5113

She was awesome.

IMG_5116

We were great friends, except for one thing. Biscuit HATED it when I tried to put the bridle on her. Specifically, she hated the cold, hard metal bit in her mouth. She was a pro at clamping her jaws shut against the bit. I was too scrawny to win a battle of strength. But I was sneaky. And a lot smarter than dear little Biscuit.

IMG_5117

I developed 2 tricks for sliding that bridle right over her head, past those long horsey teeth:

  1. Get a handful of oats and hide the bit in them. Worked every time, but got a little messy, and we didn’t always have oats on hand.
  2. Stick my finger in the corner of her mouth and wriggle it around a little. She always automatically opened her mouth, at which point I jammed the bit in.

IMG_5118

Success! Poor outsmarted Biscuit.

You’re probably wondering what on EARTH brought on this little childhood anecdote. While I do enjoy reminiscing about my brief country-girlhood, recent events have caused this memory to surface:

IMG_5063

When it’s toothbrushing time, I take a turn brushing and then Jay gets a turn. Lately he has been reminding me of Biscuit: Jay likes to clamp his teeth down and hide from the toothbrush. This was rather frustrating and difficult until I applied horsey bridling trick #2: Insert finger into corner of mouth. Wriggle finger. Open sesame, jawbone! Hello, sparkly-white Jay-teeth!

IMG_5114

Thank you, Biscuit!

IMG_5112

I guess I should say thanks to Molly (our other horse) too, because she had the same jaw-clamping horsey habit. [Side note: the quality is low on these photos because I took pictures of my horse pictures, since I didn’t have a digital camera back in the day, and our scanner is down]

And now, permit me to  trot down memory lane just a little longer…

IMG_5109

Oh those carefree summer days when I lived in a bathing suit, overalls, cowboy boots, and a bike helmet! Ride, swim, ride, camp. Repeat. Wow, my pants sure got dirty.

IMG_5111

Saddles were too much work. We’d just throw on a bridle, jump on, and GO! Having horses was a FUN 4 years of my life. Being a hooligan in the Tennessee woods was awesome!

IMG_5104

ah, my heart is warm with the memories.

IMG_5067

Who would’ve thought that my stubborn ole horses of all things would help Jay have clean teeth? I like it.

Diaper Alert!

Not all diapers are created equal. After a brief foray into the world of less-expensive generic diapers, I have concluded once and for all that Huggies rule! I never wavered when Jay was littler, but recently when I noticed that Target diapers are slightly cheaper than a big Costco box o Huggies, I tried them. Conclusion: Target brand diapers are ok for toddlers, but they just don’t hold messy runny baby poo. We’re talking demolished Rose clothes AND babypoo soaked through all layers (to the skin) of whoever was unlucky enough to be holding her at the moment of combustion.  Now you know. Huggies.

IMG_5015

Rose kind of skipped size 2 diapers—her giant box of size ones lasted way longer than they fit, and by the time we finished them, it made no sense to get a big box of size 2’s, just to have her grow out of them again. We got some Target size 2’s, but now we’re moving back to quality. I am still getting used to Rose’s juicy little body—Jay was/is such a skinny fellow! He wore size 2’s for his whole first year of life. [side note: I HATE it when apostrophes are misused. I don’t know if the plural of 2 is 2s or 2’s or if it’s just incorrect to pluralize a numeral in general. Apologies to all you other informed grammaticians. Also–while misuse of apostrophes appalls me, I have no qualms about inventing words. For the record.]

IMG_4925

In their defense, the Target diapers did match these pajamas. (they are Jay’s old ones, and they do say Mommy’s Little Boy on the front. But Rose can’t read, she doesn’t wear them in public, and we know she’s a girl).

IMG_5017

Now on to the fun stuff…Rose is 16 lbs. Jay is 28 lbs. They can both fit the same size of diaper! I still get Jay size 4’s (ahg, I’m suffering from acute apostrophe paranoia today). But, I only pack size 3’s in the diaper bag now. Convenient.

And NOW on to megapictures:

IMG_5038

Same diaper! I think their waists are nearly the same circumference somehow.

IMG_5037

A string bean and a butterbean! I like how you can see Jay’s little tan lines: farmer tan, shorts tanline, and sandals tan on top of his feet.

IMG_5042

Rose is such a calm, longsuffering little girl.

IMG_5043

I love how Rose is fascinated with whatever Jay is doing.

IMG_5044

She smiles at him even though he’s trying to yank off her arm.

IMG_5049

Booty shot—proof that these are both size 3 diapers—see that little pink 3? Looking at the LENGTH of Jay’s femur compared to Rose’s little chub astounds me. Growing children are miraculous. How does it happen so fast?

IMG_5046

Rose is saying “Jay, you are SO COOL and I love you!”

IMG_5047

Well, I’d better stop showing off my cute children and go start playing with them. Jay is having a mischevious day and Rose is having an emotional (teething) day and I promised Jay that we would make zucchini muffins.

The Nephites ate what??

This morning while I was reading in the Book of Mormon, I had an insight into the diet of the Nephites.

IMG_5080

3 Nephi 6:2 says “…they did take with them all that they had not devoured, of all their grain of every kind, and their gold, and their silver, and all their precious things…” Wouldn’t you just love to devour some gold and silver? The image inspired a little doodle…

IMG_5076

I need some of those recipes.

[Side note: I’m not trying to mock the scriptures or anything; the wording in this verse just made me smile a little]

3 White Kitchen Aids

I have 3 Kitchen Aids. I do things with all of them every day. They are great.

IMG_5030

Can you spot the 3 White Kitchen Aids? (hint: 2 of them are really cute)

IMG_5031

Yesterday, Jay and Rose helped me make their Uncle Sam some birthday peanut butter chocolate chip cookies. We baked ‘em, boxed ‘em (with tons of cushioning), and mailed them to Sam for a 2-week-late birthday treat.

IMG_5032

Rose can’t sit up by herself yet, but she is pretty good at staying upright when I wedge her in a corner. She likes being close to the action! The noise from the Kitchen Aid mixer didn’t even scare her.

IMG_5029

Jay licked off the peanut butter-coated utensils. He was pretty enthusiastic about it. His face is covered with evidence that he loves peanut butter almost as much as his Mama does.

I like my Kitchen Aids.

Bare-ly 5 months

One of the things I like about having TWO kids is I can compare their baby pictures. It’s fun. I sneak peeks at Jay’s baby pictures and then put Rose in similar poses. They’re pretty easy to tell apart, in my opinion.

IMG_4978

Rose is FIVE months old? Wow.

IMG_4045

You die-hard Jay-fans out there might recognize this one, from waaaaay back when Jay was 5 months old.

IMG_4988

Can you tell how much stiffer Rose is than Jay? She only relaxes when she sleeps. It can be quite tiring. She also has more of a booty than her brother, like a true girl. hee hee

IMG_4046

Awesome face. Ok, enough with the bare pictures…

IMG_4959

Can you see that one little sharp tooth in there?

IMG_4028

Yes, Jay was Mr. Toothy. I’m not sad that Rose is taking a little bit longer in the dental department.

IMG_4937

What is it about babies in hats?

IMG_4094

melt.

And for posterity…

[if Jeff and I both managed to live through being child #2, I’m sure Rose will too, right?]
