SANDay

Yesterday morning Jay had his seven year doctor checkup, so we took advantage of the situation and played a wee game of hooky on the remainder of his school day. FYI, Jay is lookin' good: 4' 3'' tall (95%), 54 pounds (66%), and healthy as a horse. He enjoyed lounging on the exam table and watching TV while waiting for Dr. Weaver to come in. Amber enjoyed crinkling the tissue paper. Rose bounced all around between us all.

After the doctor appointment, we packed up a picnic, picked up and packed in Aunt Steph and three cousins, and drove the hour to the Twin Sisters to play in the sand. SAND SAND SAND! We stayed and played in the sun n sand for three carefree hours before emotions ran high and the youngsters and oldsters alike were all tuckered out.

Sand got EVERYWHERE. Picnics and sand don't always mix in the most...palatable way.

Cousin-sisters, picnicking in front of the Twin Sisters.

 Amber, our little desert wanderer.

Jay dug a hole and sat in it proudly. Ever since our last visit to this site, he has had plans to come back, dig a bigger hole, and eat his lunch in it. His dream came true this time around, complete with a sandwich in a sandy hole.

 Layne caught a beetle

 Grayce picked the grass.

My favorite picture of the day--the best one with all six cousins in it.

They kept filling their socks with sand playing "trick or treat"

An enormous sand box of dreams--so much powdery fine soft white sand! It made my motherly heart happy to watch the kids roam wild and free, barefoot in the warm sand.

My best attempt at getting the kids with the Twin Sisters in the background.

Tate clutched his sock-o-sand for most of the day.

After a while, Amber started getting tired and frustrated with walking on hills of soft sand. Step--slip--step--stumble--step--slip--step--slide...

 Jumpin' Jay!

I think all of the kids had some version of a sand-stache or beard on their faces by the end.

They hiked up and ran down one of the sand dune hills over and over:

The boys belly flopped, and the girls floated down.

Home again, home again: harnessing the raw power of the minivan in all its glory.

It was a good day.
