Winter in April

We very nearly had a white Easter! Some wild wintry weather dominated our week.

On Monday there was an intense wind/hail/snow storm that knocked out power for all of the schools in town, and students were dismissed to go home before noon. The snow blew sideways and didn't stick to the ground. Jeff picked up all three kids on his way home, and we decided to have screen time right away in case the power went out later. The power never went out at our house, so we all had a very quiet afternoon of pure veg-time. It was a random extension of spring break!

On Tuesday afternoon, it got super windy again and hailed for a while before snowing thick, heavy, and wet. The girls came home from school and built a snowman. By the time they finished the snowman, most of the snow had melted. Rose and Amber came inside soaked to the skin through their snow suits from the wet spring snow.

On Wednesday it was just plain COLD and windy all day--mid thirties and a steady 20mph winds make for miserable conditions to be outdoors. Jeff was busy all day and half the night working on hosting Sunnyside High School's first home track meet of the season. It was a TON of work without enough help (only four volunteers showed up), and Jeff was exhausted when he finally finished all of the result entry sometime after 11pm.

On Thursday, we woke up to a few inches of snow. It was barely below freezing, though, and the ground wasn't frozen, so the roads were passable. Jeff's long-covid forced him to stay home to recover from the intensity of hosting his first track meet. Most of the snow had melted by the afternoon.

On Friday, I picked Amber up from school 45 minutes early for the donut date that we had been planning all week. Amber was so excited! Of course she told her teacher about it so it was known at the school that I was picking up my child early to get donuts, but oh well. We went to Pepe's Bakery but they didn't have donuts ready yet, so we got other Mexican pastries and then went to the library for a fresh stack of books. Amber checked out 24 books. Our library bag was so heavy we could barely walk while carrying it! It was sweet to spend a little one on one time with Amber, doing things she loves. When we left the library, we went back to the school and picked up Rose and drove to piano lessons. On the way home from piano lessons, we checked Pepe's again and got donuts at last. (Pepe's Bakery is two blocks from piano lessons and five or six blocks from the library, which is just over half a mile from the school. Small town life is the best.)

On Friday night, Amber finished reading the picture scripture Book of Mormon for the first time with Jeff and me. She was so proud and happy! It is sweet to see how excited she is about the scriptures. Jay read the entire unabridged Book of Mormon when he was 7 years old, and Rose read a slightly abridged (no Isaiah chapters) Book of Mormon for kids when she was 7. Amber wasn't ready for those books, so we did the next best thing: the picture scripture book. I love the idea of getting my kids into the habit of daily personal scripture study as early as possible, and I think reading the Book of Mormon in some form before they get baptized is a great way to make that happen. Amber has already started reading the picture scripture Old Testament book.

On Saturday, Jeff stayed home from the track meet to care for his health. The wind picked up and the wind chill was down to 31 degrees when I went running. It scoured my skin till I thought my face would shatter! We stayed inside for most of the day.

Sunday (today) was Easter! Thankfully no more snow fell, even though the hills rimming our valley to the north and south were all still covered in white on Easter morning. After church we went to Grandview for White family Easter lunch. When we got home from that, Jeff and I quickly filled a couple dozen Easter eggs with Trix cereal and hid them in the front yard. The kids found all but two eggs, and enjoyed a bowl of fruity colorful cereal after the hunt. Happy Easter!

The first snowfall of the week.

Monday afternoon Mario Kart (I read a book while my family played).

Building a snowman in April.

An hour after it stopped snowing on Tuesday, the snow was gone.

Crunchy ice in the grass and frosty knees after my run.

The snowman melted so fast!

Jeff, working late into the night at our kitchen table after the track meet, entering a couple hundred results that didn't upload automatically from the computerized timing system.

Thursday morning: another snow.

Rose and Amber, hiking to the bus stop at the end of our driveway on Thursday morning.

It was super weird to have a full canal and snow on the ground at the same time (since the canal gets drained for winter).

Running in snow is tough on the ankles.

This 70+ year old pine tree on the northeast side of our house looked extra majestic on the sunny snowy spring day.

Donut date with Amby! We love Pepe's!

Next stop: the library. Our checkout receipt was so long with 24 books on it.

See those snowy white hills in the background with the green field in front? Usually those low hills are brown.

Commemorative Book of Mormon finisher's picture.

Saturday morning sister squabble: I delayed my run to mediate the argument and eventually these girls did say sorry, "I love you," and hugged it out. It was definitely a journey to get to that point.

The snow made those baby hills look like mountains!

One more springtime in town with snow on the hills picture, with the high school on the right.

Amber likes to snuggle up either right next to her family or, in this case, on top of her brother.

Family Easter morning picture: it was a cold Easter morning, at barely 40 degrees. I sacrificed fashion for warmth and wore my massive chunky sweater on top of my floral short sleeve dress. Amber had fleece leggings on.

One more for luck. I was not in photo-mode and couldn't think of any better way to get a good picture this time, haha.

The Easter egg hunt!

Rose found her 16 eggs first, and called out "I won!" Whereupon we reminded her that Easter egg hunts are not competitions, especially because everyone gets the same number of eggs regardless of speed. Rose was still triumphant.

Amber finished second. (Yes that's a Halloween bucket full of Easter eggs.)

None of us could find the final 2 eggs, so Jay finished up and had his bowl of Trix cereal. Even the 14 eggs Jay did find ended up holding more cereal than fit in Jay's bowl. He gave a couple of eggs to his sisters once his bowl was full.

Emptying and eating the eggs. Cereal is the best filler. They ate all of their cereal filled eggs at once and we had no residual candy or sugar rushes to deal with. Mom win.

Our short Easter egg hunt generated most of our Easter pictures, but most of our Easter celebrations were spent at church and with family, spending time together and being grateful for Jesus Christ's resurrection.

I'm so glad we didn't have a white Easter!
