On the way to piano lessons yesterday, I asked Jay how his day at school was. When he replied with a monosyllabic "fine," I got more specific. "What was one thing that you did at school today?"
Jay responded with two events: "We got to write our own story problems and I found out that two girls have a crush on me."
Swallowing a smile, I did my best kind, nonchalant voice: "Really? You are such a nice boy, I can see why they like you. Is one of them the girl who gave you that bracelet?" I asked. [A few weeks ago he came home with a handmade beaded bracelet and informed me that his friend gave it to him. He wears it every day right next to his other beloved silicone arm bands.]
"No, it wasn't Jocelyn," Jay replied, then he told me the two girls' names.
"How did you find out that they have a crush on you?" I asked.
"My friend Jocelyn is friends with them and she told me that they have a crush on me," Jay replied with relish.
"What did you say?" I think I disguised my burning curiosity and bursting amusement.
"I told them that I like them both equally as friends, to calm the competition." Jay explained, matter-of factly. Then he opened up The Lord of the Rings (Jeff's massive trilogy in one hardbound book) and went to Middle Earth for the rest of our drive to piano lessons.
Is there anything better than a confident, kind, sensitive, clever, quick-witted eight-year-old boy?

Bahaha I love that so much! Why can't we live next to you guys so that Cambrie and Jay can play happily as friends with no impending thoughts of crushes or boy/girl drama? I love his response, "to calm the competition." Ha! So clever and tactful! From my IG post--after that boy had brought Cambrie some flowers, apparently she told Patrick she wanted to get something for him, too. So she wrote a lovely letter to this boy AND his twin brother that she's going to hand over with a Book of Mormon! Floored me. And I couldn't have thought of a better kind-but-clearly-platonic response myself.
Haha. I'm not surprised. Jay is a pretty cool kid. Glad he's making lots of friends at his new school this year.
