Santa

Please contrast exhibits A and B below.

Exhibit A:

Normal, cheery children. Happy, giggly, excited about Christmas.

Exhibit B:

Children facing Santa. Santa came to our ward Christmas party last night. Jay wouldn’t even look at him, and kept shrinking away into my leg. Rose would not move a single step toward Santa, but she couldn’t stop staring at him. She might have talked to him if Jay had, but she always follows his lead. So when Jay was scared, she instantly did not trust the guy in the fake beard. So much for a picture of two cute kids smiling on Santa’s lap.

Jay wouldn’t un-cling from my leg even for a present. It surprised me that my normally sociable, brave kids froze up in front of Santa. We don’t talk about Santa a whole lot at home, but they know who he is. Maybe they freaked out because we told them that Santa is pretend, just a fun story, and suddenly he showed up at church in the flesh?

In spite of their fears, Jay and Rose were VERY excited about the book and bear that Santa gave them.
